Search Engine Optimization

Establish and increase your rankings on the top search engines by using this simple approach.

  1. Determine your keywords
Overture's free advertiser tool will help you determine the best keywords to use when generating your metatags, the code that many search engines use to rank your site pages. While Overture isn't representative of all search engines, it serves as a good gauge of what keywords are being used.

WordTracker is service of choice for professional web developers since it provides an extensive list of keywords based on searches across multiple search engines. Keywords can also be easily downloaded and pasted into your keyword metatag.

  2. Generate your metatags
Submit Express provides a free tool for generating the code you'll need for search engines to find and rank you. Do this before you submit to Inktomi or any other search engine.

  3. Incorporate keywords into your copy
Aside from metatags, many search engines look for keywords in the copy and alt-tags of each page. For a particular keyword search, your page will tend to rank higher if that keyword occurs multiple times throughout your site or page. This is called keyword density.

  4. Submit your site to the Inktomi Network
Trellian is an Inktomi partner which offers 48 hour guaranteed URL inclusion to the network of Inktomi powered sites: MSN, Looksmart, HotBot, Overture, About and more. To purchase, first sign-up for an account with Trellian, an Inktomi partner, then go to their "Prices" section and select Inktomi@$39/year per URL; $24.95/URL for 2+ URLs.

  5. Submit manually and directly to key search engines offering free submissions:

Transfering Existing Sites to Easy-Affordable Web Sites

If you have an existing web site, even if it's on a free hosting service, follow these easy instructions for transfering your web pages to your new hosting service with Easy-Affordable Web Sites.

  1. If you're using a free service, such as Tripod, make sure your files are actually published...this creates actual files on the hosting server. Otherwise, there's nothing to transfer because the files have not actually been created.
  2. Find out what your FTP address is. For example, for Tripod, it's ftp.tripod.com
  3. Open your FTP program. If you don't have one, you can download free versions at:

  4. Download web pages to your computer.
Skip this part if you already have your web page files (html) stored on your hard drive or a CD.

    CuteFTP:

    • Choose the FTP tab and Quick Connect

    • Enter:
      Hostname: your FTP address
Id: [for either your existing hosting service, or your member name for Tripod]
Password: [as established through your hosting service or Tripod]
Directory: [generally, you leave this blank]

You can safely ignore the other fields, since the default values will work just fine.

    • Once connected, you'll see CuteFTP's main screen, which is used to transfer files to and from remote servers, and is divided into four windows. At this point, just worry about the center-right and center-left windows. The center-right window displays the files and directories of your existing host site (such as Tripod). The center-left window displays the files and directories from your computer's hard drive.

    • Find the file you'd like to download in the center-right window. Go to the "Commands" tab and select "Download" from the pull-down menu.

    • Select the folder on your harddrive where you'll want to store your web page files. Remember this location for when you have to upload to Easy-Affordable Web Sites.

    Fetch:

    • Select the Edit menu and Make New Connection

    • Enter:
      Hostname: your FTP address
Id: [for either your existing hosting service, or your member name for Tripod]
Password: [as established through your hosting service or Tripod]
Directory: [any sub-directory where your files were placed]

    • Once connected, you'll see a list of all the files within your existing hosting directory.

    • Find the file you'd like to download and click on "Get".

    • Select the folder on your harddrive where you'll want to store your web page files. Remember this location for when you have to upload to Easy-Affordable Web Sites.
